Definição1
The disassembly, cleaning, and inspection of an engine and the repair and replacement of all parts that do not meet the manufacturer's specifications. After all of the inspections and repairs are made, the engine is reassembled and tested according to the manufacturer's instructions. Major overhaul restores an engine to a serviceable condition, and it normally operates as though it were new.

Contexto
The Maintenance and Records Group Chairperson is responsible for locating and reviewing all maintenance records and appropriate flight documents to ascertain the maintenance history of the aircraft in respect to adequacy of inspections, malfunctions that might be related to the accident, time on the aircraft, engines and components, and the time since overhaul.
This could be defined as the number of hours an aircraft would fly before it is scheduled for a major overhaul or for retirement.
