- Cyclonic tropical weather systems that affect the western side of Central America and originate in the Pacific intertropical convergence zone. They typically last several days, are slow moving and are accompanied by very heavy rainfalls, resulting in damaging floods and landslides in the mountainous regions. They have a different atmospheric structure from that of hurricanes, since their mid-tropospheric cores are cold.
