A principal cloud type (cloud genus), predominantly stratiform, in the form of a gray and/or whitish layer or patch, which nearly always has dark parts and is nonfibrous (except for virga).

Another weather observation was taken after the accident, at 1636 hours, indicating winds from 170 degrees at 6 knots, visibility in excess of 10 kilometers, 118th sky coverage by cumulus clouds at 2,000 feet, 318th~ sky coverage by stratocumulus clouds at 4,000 feet, and 618th~ sky coverage by cirrus clouds at 30,000 feet.
