Sinônimos
decompression sickness
Definição1
(1) The formation or liberation of gas bubbles (chiefly nitrogen) in body tissues following rapid exposure to low atmospheric pressure conditions without using a pressure suit or pressurized cabin. (2) The disease or condition caused by the formation of gas bubbles (mostly nitrogen) in the body fluids. The disease is characterized principally by neuralgic pains, cramps, and swelling; it sometimes results in death.

Definição2
Release of bubbles or nitrogen into blood and other body fluids as a result of too-rapid reduction in ambient pressure. May be due to return to sea-level from much increased pressure ('caisson sickness', 'the bends') or from sea-level to pressure corresponding to altitude greater than 30,000 ft (about 10,000 m). Potentially fatal if original, increased, pressure is not rapidly restored.

Contexto
Divers with decompression sickness or an air embolism require immediate treatment with hyperbaric oxygen in a recompression chamber. These dive-related injuries are worsened by reduced atmospheric pressure. Aircraft transporting these victims should fly at the lowest safe altitude, which may require taking a less direct route.
