- 1 (a) rotation about the longitudinal axis of the aircraft, created by movement of the ailerons; roll is produced by moving the stick to the left or right; see also BANK (b) flight manoeuvre with 360º rotation about the longitudinal axis of the aircraft; loops and rolls are aerobatic manoeuvres (c) roll cloud = cloud created in the rotor zone on the downwind side of mountain ranges 2 to rotate the aircraft around its longitudinal axis; move the control column to the left to roll the aircraft to the left; to roll into a turn = to roll or bank the aircraft so that it turns left or right; by rotating the yoke the ailerons are moved and the aircraft rolls into a turn.

- The difference between roll and bank is that roll is movement whereas bank suggestes a fixed attitude of the aircraft. Consequently, a turn might be expressed in angles of bank: 'turn at a bank angle of 30º', and the movement to obtain the bank might be expressed as roll: 'roll the aircraft to the left'.
