- The maintenance record is used to record discrepancies, corrective action, modification details, total time in service, current status of compliance with mandatory continuing airworthiness information, and the current status of the aircraft's compliance with the maintenance programme. Finally, maintenance records show that all requirements for the signing of a maintenance release have been met.

- The physical size of the records can be overwhelming. Therefore, all of the following records need not be physically presented to the maintenance group but must be available to them upon request. As the line of investigation develops, specific records will come into play.
