initial approach

- (1) That part of an instrument approach procedure consisting of the first approach to the first navigational facility associated with the procedure, or a predetermined fix (ICAO). This is a procedure in which the aircraft has departed an initial approach fix or point and is maneuvering to enter the intermediate or final approach. It ends at the intermediate fix or point or, where no intermediate segment is established, at the final approach fix or point. (2) That part of a visual approach of an aircraft immediately prior to arrival over the airfield of destination or over the reporting point from which the final approach to the airfield begins.
