- A helicopter (or a rotary-wing aircraft) is a heavier-than-air aircraft supported in flight chiefly by the reactions of the air on one or more power-driven rotors on substantially vertical axes (cf. Doc 9569).
- For fixed-wing aircraft, a flying time of about 30 minutes per search leg is recommended. For rotary-wing aircraft, a flying time of about 20 minutes is recommended.
