- Installation of an add-on silencer (muffler) may be an effective method for reducing the noise levels of a propeller-driven aeroplane powered by a reciprocating engine. However, an add-on silencer (muffler) may also degrade the performance of the aeroplane and therefore adversely affect the aircraft’s noise characteristics. The aeroplane performance characteristics must be re-evaluated after the installation of the add-on silencer (muffler).
