- For a given cloud or cloud layer, the highest level in the atmosphere at which the air contains a perceptible quantity of cloud particles.

- The cloud top is usually the coldest part of the cloud and thus more sensitive to heterogeneous freezing. In addition, many satellite instruments are only sensitive to cloud top properties.
