In general, any destructive storm, but usually applied to severe local storms in particular, that is, intense thunderstorms, hailstorms, and tornadoes.

Contexto
The more extreme manifestations of the thunderstorm such as microbursts and tornadoes, which in theory could accompany any severe storm, tend to be especially prevalent in certain parts of the world which appear to be particularly favourable for their development.
