surface observation

- An aviation weather report describing the weather conditions at a specified location and at a specified time, as observed from the ground. Regular observations are made on the hour, and special observations are made as necessary to report significant change in the weather.

- This term is applied mainly to observations that are taken for the primary purpose of preparing surface synoptic charts. Major types of surface observation are synoptic weather observation, aviation weather observation, and marine weather observation. Climatological observations may also be included.

- It is preferable that the operator (or automated system) should make the surface observation immediately after the balloon release rather than prior to the release.
