Definição1
A long isobars with velocity exactly balancing pressure gradient; equilibrium between force directed towards region of low pressure and centrifugal forces.

Definição2
Horizontal wind having the same direction as the geostrophic wind but with a magnitude consistent with a balance of three forces: the pressure gradient force, the Coriolis force, and the centrifugal force arising from the curvature of a parcel trajectory.

Contexto
In very unstable situations with heavy showers and thunderstorms, gusts may be in excess of the gradient wind and may reach that of the 5 000 ft wind.
While the gradient wind is precisely defined with respect to its direction, the magnitude of the gradient wind is not so precisely defined owing to its dependence on the curvature of a parcel trajectory, which may follow the geostrophic wind or the actual wind.
