A self-contained engine-driven unit that supplies electrical current to the spark plugs, completely independent of the airplane’s electrical system. Normally there are two magnetos per engine.

Ignition faults are often indicated by intermittently rough operation of the engine. Electric harness, magneto wiring to the cockpit switches, magneto drives and timing are all points worthy of inspection.
