optimum altitude

- It is defined as being the pressure altitude which provides the greatest specific range or fuel mileage at a given weight and speed. Flying higher or lower than this altitude will decrease the range of the aeroplane. This altitude is called the optimum altitude.

- Optimum is an adjective referring to the point at which the condition or amount of something is the best. For example: The optimum altitude for jet aircraft is higher than that for piston engine aircraft.
- Contexto
- The concept had the potential to enhance safety and significantly contribute to more efficient airspace management, optimum altitude aircraft operations, preferred routings and reduced fuel burn in remote regions where ground-based surveillance was not feasible or practical.
- During an intermediate levelling off, the aircraft will operate at a sub-optimum altitude and operational mode and will fly a longer track than necessary at non optimum altitude, consuming more fuel.
- These conditions are generally expected to be the combination of altitude and airspeed that results in the highest SAR value, which is usually at the maximum range cruise Mach number at the optimum altitude.
