- Vertical display. This feature allows a dynamic situation assessment (aircraft position, safe altitude, display of terrain and vertical flight path) which reduces the likelihood of controlled flight into terrain. In the context of the Flight Safety Foundation (US) approach and landing accident reduction activities, it was found that inadequate situational awareness was a factor in 51 per cent of approach and landing accidents analysed.
- A procedure designed for CDO should keep the workload required during a continuous descent within the limits expected for normal flight operations. The lateral and vertical flight path generated by the on-board computer should be capable of being easily modified by the flight crew, using normal data entry procedures to accommodate tactical interventions by ATC as well as variations in wind speed and direction, atmospheric pressure, temperature, icing conditions, etc.
