- An aircraft whose wing is rigidly attached to the structure. The term fixed-wing is used to distinguish these aircraft from rotary-wing aircraft, such as helicopters and autogiros.

- Aircraft, when used as a generic term, means any heavier-than-air flying machine. An aeroplane (or a fixed-wing aircraft) is a power-driven heavier-than-air aircraft, deriving its lift in flight chiefly from aerodynamic reactions on surfaces which remain fixed.
