- Definição1
- MLAT is the ICAO standard system used to identify the position of an aircraft based on an aircraft's transmission of a squitter or as response to an interrogation by a ground-based SSR or by active MLAT.

- Definição2
- Multilateration (MLAT) System is a group of equipment configured to provide position derived from the secondary surveillance radar (SSR) transponder signals (replies or squitters) primarily using time difference of arrival (TDOA) techniques. Additional information, including identification, can be extracted from the received signals.

- Nota adicional1
- An MLAT relies on signals from an aircraft’s transponder being detected at a number of receiving stations. MLAT uses a technique known as TDOA to establish surfaces that represent constant differences in distance between the target and pairs of receiving stations. The aircraft position is determined by the intersection of these surfaces.
- Nota adicional2
- An MLAT requires a minimum of four receiving stations to calculate an aircraft’s position. If the aircraft’s pressure altitude is known then the position may be resolved using three receiving stations. However, in practice, operational MLATs have many more receiving stations to ensure adequate coverage and performance.
- Nota adicional3
- MLAT technique is a new technique providing independent cooperative surveillance.
- Contexto
- For radar, position integrity and accuracy are known performance characteristics and therefore are indicated as “fixed” in the table. However, for ADS-B and MLAT, those characteristics are dynamic and have also been derived into data elements that therefore have their own performance characteristics (latency, reliability).
