- The vertical speed indicator (VSI) displays the rate of climb or descent in feet per minute (f.p.m.) by measuring how fast the ambient air pressure increases or decreases as the helicopter changes altitude.

- The vertical speed indicator gives an indirect indication of the pitch attitude of the helicopter and should be used in conjunction with the other pitch instruments to attain a high degree of accuracy and precision. The instrument indicates zero when in level flight.
