Satellite navigation is expected to bring safety benefits through reducing hazards related to uncertain position and through more precise guidance. In some cases this technology will also increase the flexibility and efficiency of flight operations by reducing flight time and fuel required. Eventually, satellite navigation could also reduce the cost of providing services and expand aviation’s ability to serve the public. These benefits are described in more detail below.
Contexto
The maps used across various States in the world to determine the position of runways, obstacles, airports, navigation aids and ATS routes are based on a wide variety of geodetic reference systems. Consequently, it is necessary to Convert data originating in one reference system before it can be used in a different reference system. With the introduction of satellite navigation, the problem is more evident and has clearly shown the need for a universal map reference system.
