- The part of the exhaust system of either a reciprocating engine or a gas turbine engine through which the exhaust gases leave the engine. If a muffler is installed in the exhaust system of a reciprocating engine, the tail pipe usually connects to the muffler and carries the exhaust gases away from the airplane.
