Nota adicional1
The Airborne Collision Avoidance System (ACAS) also called Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) is required on many commercial aircraft. The system is designed to make flight crews aware of nearby traffic and to resolve conflicts. ACAS uses existing Air Traffic Control systems and the capabilities of Mode-S transponders to coordinate evasive manoeuvres between conflicting aircraft. Components of ACAS typically include a transponder, several antennas and a computer. Manufacturer’s assistance is required to test components or recover non-volatile memory.
Nota adicional2
Acronym in English: TCAS.
Contexto
An example is a mid-air collision where a Boeing 737 collided head on with an Embraer legacy business jet. Both aircraft were assigned flight level 370, the Embraer transponder was not operating and neither aircraft received a traffic alert and collision avoidance system (TCAS) alert. All 154 passengers and crew aboard the Boeing 737 were killed. An offset to the right by one or both aircraft would have prevented this accident.
