- The sum total of the empty weight of an aircraft, its crew crew, passengers, and cargo,. It is the maximum permissible weight of an aircraft; any additional load beyond this must be in the form of fuel (i.e., the maximum takeoff weight less the total usable fuel in the applicable aircraft).
