- [1] More or less horizontal aerofoil at tail of aerodyne (invariably fixed-wing) providing stability in pitch; fixed or adjustable only for trim, and carrying elevators (US = stabilizer). [2] Aerofoil pivoted at tail about horizontal axis and driven directly by pilot of fixed-wing aerodyne or rotorcraft as primary flight control in pitch in translational flight; forms complete surface without separate elevators (US = stabilizer).

Variations from predicted setting may indicate a weight and balance shift not normally encountered.
