- In an internal combustion engine, fuel starvation is defined as the failure of the fuel system to supply sufficient fuel to allow the engine to run properly, for example due to blockage, vapor lock, contamination by water, malfunction of the fuel pump or incorrect operation, leading to loss of power or engine stoppage.

- Running out of fuel or fuel starvation to the engine This is often indicated by sputtering or erratic increases and decreases of power but, on occasion, depending upon the type of carburettor or fuel injection system, there may be no audible or noticeable warnings except a silent fading away of the engine. On multi-engine aircraft, especially when flying on instruments or at night and where constant speed propellers are in use, failure may be difficult to detect for some time. Fuel pressure and fuel flow meters give the most reliable indication of fuel starvation causing an engine loss of power. Incorrect fuel valve setting or fuel system mismanagement particularly on multi-engine aircraft has caused more accidents than running out of fuel in the normal sense.
