- (1) A design factor used to provide for the possibility of loads greater than those assumed, and for uncertainties in design and fabrication (ICAO). In aircraft design, the margin of strength against loads greater than the limit load - normally 1.5 to 1.7 times for most parts. (2) The ratio of the breaking strength of a structure to the maximum load that it will ever be exposed to in normal usage. This is always greater than unity.
